How

Confirm all debts, taxes, and administration expenses are settled or reserved for before distributing anything. Distribute strictly according to the will, the trust, or your state's intestacy statute. Get a signed receipt and release from every beneficiary for whatever they receive, including personal property. For retirement accounts, have each beneficiary work with the custodian directly on their rollover or distribution election, since the tax consequences depend on their choice.
