Firearm licenses

Report to SAPS; firearms must be secured immediately

How

Secure the firearms immediately in a safe, do not leave them accessible and do not simply keep them yourself. Report the death to the nearest SAPS station and ask about handing the firearms in for safekeeping against a written receipt. Ask SAPS what the executor must do next, options usually include transfer to a licensed person, sale through a dealer, or destruction. Keep every receipt and reference number, the executor must account for each firearm.

Timing

Report immediately. There are statutory deadlines for the executor to deal with the firearms.
