NHS Organ Donor Register and GP records; discuss wishes with the family

Some steps differ by region inside the country.

Where

The NHS Organ Donor Register, and the hospital's specialist nurse for organ donation if the death was in hospital.

How

If the death is recent and in hospital, the specialist nurse will already have raised this, they act quickly because timing is critical. Check the NHS Organ Donor Register for their recorded decision if you are unsure. Look for a donor card or a note of their wishes in their paperwork. Tell NHS Blood and Transplant of the death so the register is updated.

Timing

Donation decisions happen within hours, so this is only actionable immediately after the death.
